So here’s “the rest of the story’”—you learned on the previous four pages to point the middle of the camera at the brightest spot to fool the camera and keep your scene dark. Guess what we have to do with a really bright scene? Of course, just the opposite: we have to point the camera at the darkest area because the camera “brain” wants to take too short an exposure. This results in a dingy white (medium-tone white is gray).

Repeat after me, “Want it brighter? Point at a dark area. Want it darker? Point at a bright area.” Opposites attract—get it? Now show your friends what a good photographer you are. Try snow/sand mode if your camera has one (see pages 90 and 91 for more info).
